An oral screening may be possible for one type of colon cancer.

Researchers have found that one type of colon cancer, hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), may change the color of a type of tissue found in the mouth. HNPCC is a genetically inherited form of colon cancer caused by genetic mutations that increase a person’s risk of developing colon cancer. The oral screening technique uses a special light that is reflected in a particular way when a patient has this genetic mutation.
