Epilepsy Living with Epilepsy

A lack of sleep can cause more seizures

Although the relationship between sleep and epilepsy is not completely understood, physicians do know that lack of sleep can cause an increase in seizure activity. This can cause a vicious cycle in which a patient that becomes sleep deprived will have more seizures and the increase of seizure activity can cause the patient to become sleep deprived making it impossible to completely control seizures. By adjusting a patient’s anticonvulsant drug and treating an underlying sleep disorders, physicians and patients can correct this cycle and increase seizure control.
