Too much calcium in the blood can damage organs

Calcium is one of the most important substances in the body. High levels of calcium, detected by a blood test, can be a red flag for many conditions. Commonly called hypercalcemia, it can be the result of calcium leaching out of the bone, kidney problems, parathyroid disease, or cancer. Calcium levels can soar when certain types of cancer cells make a hormone similar to the hormone produced by the calcium-regulating parathyroid gland, or when cancer has spread from its original site to bone. Hypercalcemia can cause multiple organ damage if it left untreated.
