Sleep Disorders Insomnia

Certain cancer treatments can disturb sleep

Sleep disturbances are common among cancer patients. This can be partially explained by the anxiety and depression that often follows a diagnosis of cancer. And while pain and discomfort can keep people from sleeping well, doctors have also learned that certain cancer treatments can have an effect on sleep. People who experience nausea and vomiting from the side effects of chemotherapy often take anti-nausea medications and that can disturb sleep. In addition, some cancer therapies such as surgical removal of the ovaries, some chemotherapies and hormonal therapies for breast cancer and prostate cancer, can cause hot flashes causing a patient to wake frequently during the night in a cold sweat.
